Why the Big Noise About Ruckus – WiFi comes of age!
By Vernon YerkessPublished May 10, 2012
The great thing about WiFi is the portability it offers, right? You can move around your home or office and your device stays connected to the Internet – most of the time.
And for the convenience of portability we’ve always had to accept that we sacrifice a certain amount of reliability. Certainly that’s true compared to a rock-solid connection provided by a cable attached directly to your device. It’s a simple trade off.
Except that technological advances now mean that the trade off is no longer necessary.
Winners and Losers – Let’s Give Kids a Head Start in IT
By Vernon YerkessPublished Jan 24, 2012
We’ve just been visiting the winners of the CleverBoxes Classroom of the Future competition.
And I can tell you, handing over 25 free net books and two Lap Cabbies to a bunch of bubbly and hugely grateful primary school kids is a good way to pick you up for the rest of the day.
But I have to say there was a moment when I felt suddenly saddened by what I saw and it made me worry about how we’re preparing our youngsters for the future.

I was down with the CleverBoxes team at the BETT show in London last week. It showcases all the latest developments in education technology.
It was good to catch up with all the latest developments as well as meet many of our school IT contacts.
The big government announcement came from Education Secretary Michael Gove who plans to really shake up the way IT is taught in schools.
If you put the politics aside for a moment, you surely have to agree this is a great idea.

Schools around the country are being charged as much as TEN TIMES what they should be paying for IT equipment, including laptops. The reason – badly sold lease agreements. That’s what a BBC Radio 5 live investigation discovered.
The BBC found that in some instances finance companies were chasing heads of schools for payment for equipment the heads believed was free!
According to the report, the scale of this abuse runs into hundreds of millions of pounds.
